The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
