Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such medications should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
