Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
