Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
