Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
