The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
