The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
